Leomon recently provided a customized 120°C high-temperature heat pump solution for a hospital project in South Africa.
Hospitals have continuous demand for hot water and thermal energy for applications such as hot water supply, laundry, cleaning and other high-temperature processes. For this project, the required water temperature was significantly higher than the operating range of conventional commercial heat pumps.
To achieve a stable outlet water temperature of up to 120°C, Leomon designed a two-stage cascade heat pump system with two compressors and two independent refrigerant circuits.
Producing 120°C hot water creates a much larger temperature lift than a conventional 55–60°C heat pump.
Instead of requiring one refrigeration circuit to handle the entire temperature lift, Leomon uses a two-stage cascade configuration.
The first refrigeration circuit uses R410A.
This stage absorbs heat from the heat source and raises it to an intermediate temperature, providing suitable thermal conditions for the second stage.
The second refrigeration circuit uses R1233zd(E) and further increases the temperature to the level required by the hospital.
Through this cascade process, the system can produce high-temperature hot water up to 120°C.
The two refrigeration circuits operate at different temperature levels, allowing each stage to work within a more appropriate operating range.
For this South African hospital project, the heat pump system is equipped with Copeland compressors.
For industrial and healthcare applications, compressor reliability is particularly important because the heat pump may be required to operate for extended periods with a relatively high thermal load.
Combined with the two-stage refrigeration design, the dual-compressor configuration provides a practical solution for applications requiring temperatures well beyond those of conventional heat pumps.
The customized Leomon system features:
Maximum hot water temperature: 120°C
Two-stage cascade refrigeration system
Dual-compressor configuration
First-stage refrigerant: R410A
Second-stage refrigerant: R1233zd(E)
Copeland compressors
Designed for high-temperature commercial and industrial applications
Customized according to project operating conditions
Rather than simply increasing the discharge temperature of a conventional heat pump, the cascade architecture divides the required temperature lift between two refrigeration stages.
This makes the system particularly suitable for applications where conventional commercial heat pumps cannot reach the required water temperature.
Hospital heating requirements can differ considerably from ordinary residential and commercial applications.
Depending on the facility, thermal energy may be required for:
Domestic hot water, laundry, kitchens, cleaning processes, high-temperature water systems and other process-heating applications.
The appropriate heat pump configuration depends on the required water temperature, heating capacity, heat-source temperature, daily hot-water consumption and operating hours.
For this reason, Leomon evaluates each high-temperature heat pump project individually rather than simply selecting equipment based on building size.
The South African hospital project demonstrates Leomon's capability in 120°C high-temperature heat pump technology.
For industrial customers requiring even higher temperatures, Leomon also develops high-temperature heat pump solutions with output temperatures up to 150°C, including steam applications.
These systems can be considered for applications such as:
Food processing | Textile industry | Industrial laundry | Chemical processing | Drying | Cleaning | Waste heat recovery | Process heating | Boiler replacement
Leomon works with HVAC distributors, engineering companies, energy-saving solution providers and industrial equipment distributors worldwide.
