No. The steam is made from clean water with no chemicals added. It never directly contacts the wort or beer in normal brewing setups (it heats indirectly via heat exchangers or jackets). Even if a tiny amount of condensate got in, it would be pure water, so no off-flavors. Many craft brewers switch to our heat pump specifically to avoid the chemical taste sometimes found with boiler steam.
Not at all. The unit has a simple digital controller. You just turn it on, set the target temperature (or pressure), and it runs by itself. You can also set a timer to start heating before you arrive in the morning. There’s no need to monitor flame, adjust air-fuel ratio, or check water level in a boiler. The smallest model is about the size of a large refrigerator. The largest model needs more room, but still much less than a traditional boiler with its fuel tank and chimney.
